Wheel Throwing with Soda and Raku
Raku is an exciting firing process that creates surprising and beautiful effects on pottery using reduction and carbon trapping. Learn the basics of wheel throwing and participate in in-class raku firings of your pieces and embrace the unpredictability of ceramics. With pieces that don’t make it into the raku kiln, experiment with the effects of soda firing. Some prior experience in wheel throwing is required.

Consistency with Clay
Work on refining your wheel throwing skills to be able to replicate your successful pots! Practice good throwing techniques with the same amount of clay to produce a set of mugs, bowls, or plates that are well-made and match each other in size and style. Take on the class challenge or get feedback on your current projects. Previous wheel experience is highly encouraged, but not required.

Wheel Throwing and Beyond
Beginners will be introduced to basic shapes such as cylinders, cups, and bowls. Experienced potters will expand skills and explore forms such as lidded jars and large objects. Make unusual shapes by cutting, stacking, and altering pieces to create oval dishes, citrus juicers, and more. Experiment with different decoration techniques like sgraffito, underglazes, and soda firing. Some clay experience is recommended but not required.

Kitchen Tool Kit
Learn to alter thrown forms to meet daily tool needs in the kitchen; altering plates into spoon rests, bowls into strainers, and jars into butter crocks, to name a few. Learn to trim and decorate pieces so that they retain their individuality; but remain part of a kitchen set. Students should have completed at least one beginner class and have the ability to throw basic forms without assistance.
